Igniting the 3DGIS Revolution

I am an Engineering Doctorate Researcher from University College London investigating 3D GIS in the United Kingdom. My research is funded by ESPRC and Ordnance Survey.

Usability of 3DGIS

Who are the users of 3DGIS and how can we design 3D systems in an effective, efficient and enjoyable manner?

Applications of 3DGIS

Millions of people use GIS daily with many more using mapping sites and apps such as Google Maps. The uses of traditional GI systems are widely varying from oil & gas exploration to urban planning to environmental management. But who uses 3DGIS? What are the benefits of the extra dimension?

Data Quality of 3DGIS

Error is inherent and inevitable within all data, including spatial. As GI scientists we seek to reduce and mitigate the impact but they cannot be eliminated entirely. Do 2D GIS principles such as generalisation hold true with 3D? What is "good" quality 3D data and how can we measure it?

About Me

Kelvin Wong

Research Engineer, University College London VEIV Centre

Kelvin studied an MSc in Geographic Information Science at UCL before working as a GIS analyst at WSP Group. His research is focused on 3D GIS and data quality issues with a particular focus on semantic and feature content and descriptions. The research aims to work with Ordnance Survey to launch a national wide 3D GIS dataset. A geographer at heart, Kelvin’s interests include data visualisations, cooking and good-looking maps.
